Introducing
A Class Saddlery
My name is Ailsa Aitchison, I am a trainee saddle fitter with the Society of Master Saddlers. I have had a love for horses all my life and currently own a Welsh x Arab mare named Della who I compete in dressage with.
My aim is to help horses and owners have a correctly fitting saddle to ensure the horse is happy and comfortable to do their job and the rider feels secure and confident to be able to reach the full potential of their horse’s ability. I am looking forward to leaving a yard knowing that the horse and rider are happy in their saddle and are both ready to have lots of fun together.
After successfully completed my introductory course with the Society of Master Saddlers I have been training with Kevin Blackie from KB Saddlery for two years. I have undertaken a flocking course with Jen Roy from The Springfield Saddler and attended workshops run by Kay Hastilow covering many different aspects of how to carry out the 'perfect fit'. This has been a very exciting time enabling me to enhance my hands on knowledge and skill sets in the lead up to taking my industry approved saddlery exams.
I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and their lovely ponies!

Saddlery is a fascinating and essential aspect of equestrianism, merging craftsmanship with a deep understanding of both horse and rider needs. In the UK, where horse riding is a cherished tradition, saddle fitters play a crucial role in ensuring that both the horse and rider experience comfort and performance. A well-fitted saddle not only enhances the rider's stability and balance but also contributes significantly to the horse's wellbeing, allowing for freer movement and reducing the risk of injury.
Flocking, made of wool, pads the saddle’s panels and helps distribute the rider's weight evenly on the horse's back, preventing pressure points.
Over time, flocking can compress or shift, requiring adjustments for a proper fit. Good flocking supports a balanced saddle, enhancing the horse's movement and rider's comfort. Keeping the flocking well-maintained can help the saddle last longer and benefit the horse's health.
